What Conventional, Functional, and Integrative Medicine really say about fertility supplements


Trying to conceive can make almost anyone become an amateur supplement researcher overnight.

One minute you are casually taking a prenatal vitamin. The next, you are deep into conversations about CoQ10, NAC, methylfolate, omega-3s, magnesium glycinate, myo-inositol, sperm antioxidants, mitochondrial health, and whether your vitamin D level is “optimal” or merely “normal.”

And honestly? It can become overwhelming very quickly.

Many couples start supplements hoping they have finally found the missing piece. Sometimes supplements genuinely help. Sometimes they simply support the body while larger fertility factors are addressed. Understanding the difference matters emotionally, medically, and financially.

The truth is that fertility supplements exist in a fascinating space between conventional medicine, functional medicine, nutrition science, and wellness culture. Different medical frameworks often interpret the exact same evidence very differently.

This article explores TTC supplements through three medical lenses:

Conventional medicine, Functional medicine, Integrative medicine
And most importantly: What does the actual science support?

The Most Common TTC Supplements
Before diving into the medical frameworks, here are the supplements most commonly used in fertility and TTC support:

  • Folate / Folic Acid
This is the most universally recommended TTC supplement. 400–800\mu g/day
Folic acid supplementation before conception significantly reduces neural tube defects. This is one of the strongest and most consistent findings in reproductive nutrition research. Women are usually advised to begin supplementation at least 1-3 months before conception.
Some clinicians may recommend methylfolate instead of folic acid in certain patients, especially those with MTHFR variants, though this remains debated in conventional medicine.
  • Vitamin D
Vitamin D deficiency is common in infertility populations. Research has associated low vitamin D levels with: ovulatory dysfunction,PCOS, poorer IVF outcomes, recurrent implantation failure.

  • Iron
Iron deficiency can affect: ovulation, energy levels, implantation, pregnancy outcomes, Ferritin testing is especially important in women with:

  • Prenatal Vitamins

Most fertility clinics recommend a quality prenatal vitamin containing: folate, iodine, B12, iron, choline
Choline is increasingly emphasized because many prenatals still contain inadequate amounts.
Conventional Medicine’s Concerns About TTC Supplements

Conventional fertility medicine remains cautious because:
